Who was Dulla Bhatti?

Dulla Bhatti was a legendary Rajput hero of Punjab who led a rebellion against the Mughal emperor Akbar. Born as Rai Abdullah Khan, he was the son of a landlord, Farid. After the execution of his father and two uncles by the Mughal emperor Akbar, Dulla Bhatti took up the mantle of leading a rebellion against the Mughal rule.

He was known for his bravery and his Robin Hood-like persona. He would rob the rich and distribute the wealth among the poor. His acts of bravery and kindness made him a beloved figure among the common people of Punjab.

Dulla Bhatti and Lohri

The story of Dulla Bhatti is deeply connected with the festival of Lohri. According to folklore, Dulla Bhatti was a saviour of the poor and the downtrodden. He is particularly remembered for saving poor Punjabi girls from being sold in slave markets.

One such story is of him saving two girls, Sundri and Mundri, who were being forcibly taken to the market to be sold. Dulla Bhatti rescued them and subsequently arranged their marriages to respectable men. He even provided them with dowries from his own pocket.

During Lohri, Punjabi children go from door to door singing folk songs in praise of Dulla Bhatti, recounting his brave deeds. In return, they are given sweets, savoury snacks, and money. The popular Lohri song 'Sunder Mundriye' is actually a tribute to Dulla Bhatti's act of bravery.

Legacy of Dulla Bhatti

Despite his rebellion against the Mughal rule, Dulla Bhatti was captured and executed in 1599. However, his legacy lives on in the hearts of the people of Punjab. His acts of bravery and kindness are remembered and celebrated every year during Lohri.
