What you need
Gather a clean bamboo or sturdy pole, a festive cloth, neem or mango leaves, a flower garland, a sugar garland if applicable, and a lightweight metal vessel to place upside down at the top. Additionally, make sure to have strong cotton string or another secure tie on hand.
Select items that align with your family traditions. There is no advantage in purchasing intricate materials when simpler, reusable ones already hold significance in your household.
Step 1: prepare the space
Prepare the entrance, balcony, terrace, or window space for the Gudi display. Some families create a rangoli close by and set up a small puja thali with kumkum, turmeric, flowers, rice, and a lamp.
Before assembling the Gudi on the balcony, make sure to carefully choose and secure its location. Always prioritize safety by planning ahead, rather than making last-minute adjustments after the structure is assembled.
Step 2: dress the pole
Hang the bright cloth like a banner near the top of the bamboo, securing it tightly and neatly. Decorate the upper section with neem or mango leaves and a flower garland.
When using a sugar garland, position it to be easily seen without adding too much weight to the top.
Step 3: crown the Gudi
Position the metal container upside down on top of the pole to ensure it is secure and cannot slip off. Opt for a lighter vessel rather than a heavy one, especially in elevated areas or when it's windy.
When finished, the Gudi should appear tall and festive, yet sturdy enough to be lifted without any shaking.
Step 4: raise, secure and worship
Position the Gudi in an upright manner by the entrance or a prominent location, securing it tightly to a railing or stable support. Typically, the Gudi is displayed at a height where it can be easily seen.
Families can present flowers, kumkum, akshata, incense, or a lamp before conducting a brief prayer or aarti in accordance with their household customs. It is important to avoid placing open flames near fabrics, foliage, or in breezy areas like balconies.
A simple child-friendly version
Kids can create a mini Gudi for tabletop display with a small wooden stick, cloth or paper flowers, and a lightweight cup. Perfect for smaller spaces like apartments, classrooms, and diaspora gatherings where a full-size bamboo Gudi may not be feasible.
The importance of the teaching opportunity outweighs the size: clarify the significance of each component and involve the child in organizing it.
