Absolute Purity: The Foundation of Chhath

In Chhath Puja, cleanliness (Nahay-Khay) goes beyond a mere physical task; it represents a deep spiritual practice. The entire festival is founded on the principle of upholding a Sattvic (pure) state.

Rules of Purity

  • Dietary Cleansing: Kitchens are cleaned thoroughly, and onions, garlic, along with non-vegetarian items, are strictly prohibited. Prasad is prepared on a brand-new clay stove to avoid contamination from regular cooking.
  • Physical Cleanliness: Vratis and their family members are required to bathe before handling any Puja items. Even a stray hair or a sneeze near the Prasad necessitates restarting the entire preparation.
  • Mental Purity: Physical cleanliness is intended to reflect mental purity. Followers must refrain from anger, malice, lying, or negative thoughts throughout the four days.
